Hurt at heart — 伤 to wound, 心 the heart — and a stronger, more emotional word than the everyday 难过. It suits real grief: a pet’s death, a friend’s harsh words, a hope that came to nothing.

伤心 is real heartache, not the mild annoyance of a small inconvenience. For that, 不高兴 is enough; keep 伤心 for when something has actually broken your heart.
