How level labels work. A word belongs to a level through a separate membership record, one per standard, each carrying its own source. HSK Guide never merges the lists of two standards or renumbers one into the other — see how the inventories are kept apart.

Grammar patterns at HSK 5
Each pattern carries its structure formula, a plain-language explanation, sentences that are wrong and why, and a contrast with what it is usually confused with.
- After all: 毕竟“毕竟”
判断/要求,(主语)+ 毕竟 + 事实 | 虽然 + 不足,但 + 毕竟 + 事实
Reminds the listener of a basic fact that should weigh in the judgement — usually one that excuses or explains. It is never “at last”, and never used in questions.
concession - Cannot help but: 不免“不免”
情况,(主语)+ 不免 + (会/有点儿/有些)+ 感受/结果
Says that, given the situation, a feeling or result is natural and hard to avoid — usually a mildly unwelcome one. It never introduces a deliberate action.
modality - Unless…, otherwise…: 除非…否则…“除非……否则/不然……”
除非 + 唯一条件,否则/不然 + 不…的结果 | 除非 + 唯一条件,(主语)+ 才 + …
除非 names the one condition that would change things. 否则 or 不然 then states what happens without it; alternatively 才 states what happens only with it.
condition - Instead vs yet: 反而 and 却“反而”和“却”的区别
(不但)没/不 + A,反而 + 相反的结果 | 主语 + 却 + 意外的情况
反而 says the result went the opposite way from what the situation should have produced. 却 simply marks a turn against expectation. Both follow the subject.
contrast - Every single one: 凡是…都…“凡是……都……”
凡是 + 定语 + 名词,(主语)+ 都 + …
Opens with a whole category — everything or everyone of a certain kind — and states that the predicate holds for each member. The second clause needs 都.
inclusion - Why bother: 何必“何必”
(主语)+ 何必 + 动词短语 + (呢)?
A rhetorical question meaning “there is no need to”: it questions whether an action is worth doing and implies that it is not. It ends in 呢, never 吗.
questioning - Let alone: 何况“何况”
(连)A + 都/也 + …,何况 + B(呢)? | 理由一,何况 + 理由二
States the harder case first and lets 何况 draw the conclusion for the easier one: if even A cannot, B certainly cannot. It also adds a clinching extra reason.
addition - Simply, practically: 简直“简直”
主语 + 简直 + 太…了/跟…一样/像…/让人… | V得 + 简直 + …
Marks a description as close to literally true — an exaggeration the speaker stands by. It goes with strong expressions, never with mild degree words such as 很 or 有点儿.
degree - No wonder: 难怪“难怪”
(原来)+ 原因,难怪 + 已经看到的情况 | 难怪 + 情况,原来 + 原因
Marks a fact the speaker had already noticed and found puzzling, now explained by a cause just learned. The cause is often introduced by 原来.
inference - Even if: 哪怕…也…“哪怕……也……”
哪怕 + 假设的极端情况,(主语)+ 也 + 不变的决定
Grants an extreme or unlikely case for the sake of argument and states that the outcome still holds. A spoken, emphatic “even if”, close to 即使.
concession - Would rather: 宁可…也…“宁可……也……”
(主语)+ 宁可 + 选择的做法,也 + 不/要 + …
After weighing two unwelcome options, 宁可 marks the one the speaker accepts; 也不 rejects the other, or 也要 states the goal the sacrifice serves.
preference - Just in case: 万一“万一”
万一 + 不希望发生的事,(就)+ … | 预防措施,万一 + 情况 + 呢?
Raises an unlikely and unwelcome possibility, usually to justify a precaution. It is always hypothetical and never reports what happened.
condition - Not necessarily: 未必“未必”
主语 + 未必 + (都/会/能)+ 谓语 | 我看未必
Denies certainty rather than the fact itself: something may be true, but it does not follow. A shorter, more written equivalent of 不一定.
negation - Luckily: 幸亏“幸亏”
幸亏 + 有利条件,(主语)+ 才 + 避免的结果 | 幸亏 + 条件,不然/否则 + 本来会有的结果
Credits a fortunate circumstance with avoiding a bad outcome. The second clause says what was avoided (才没…) or what would have happened otherwise (不然…).
causation - Once…, then…: 一旦…就…“一旦……就……”
(主语)+ 一旦 + 变化/事件,(主语)+ 就 + 持续的结果
Marks a turning point — something that might happen, or has happened — after which a lasting, often serious consequence follows. Not a general “if”, and not for a one-off past event.
condition - Rather than… better to…: 与其…不如…“与其……不如……”
与其 + 不选的做法,(还)不如 + 选的做法
Compares two courses of action and recommends the second: 与其 carries the rejected option, 不如 the better one. The order never reverses.
preference - As for: 至于“至于”
话题一……,至于 + 话题二,…… | 不至于 + 严重的结果
Turns from the topic just discussed to a related one, often to set it aside or give it a different verdict. 不至于 means “it won’t come to that”.
topic - In short: 总之“总之”
细节一,细节二,(细节三),总之,+ 结论
Closes a run of particulars with the conclusion they add up to. It needs something before it to sum up, and it introduces the summary, not another point.

- 回到小城市
Going Home to a Small City
A first-person account. Five years in Beijing: half the salary on rent, three hours a day on the metro, no time to ring home. One Spring Festival back in the county town shows a new motorway, new cafés, and a school friend selling the local fruit online. He resigns, loses money in the first year, learns from the old farmers — and is careful not to tell anyone else to follow him. About 520 characters inside HSK 1–5.
阅读 6 分钟society - 让孩子做点儿家务
Let Children Do Some Housework
A short argument in the shape of an HSK 5 opinion passage: the parents’ objection first, then three reasons in order — responsibility, solving problems, talking to each other — and a paragraph of conditions on how to do it. The example that carries the first reason is a pile of unwashed bowls. About 510 characters inside HSK 1–5.

The Watch Repairer Downstairs
A narrative. Hardly anyone wears a watch now, so why does Master Chen keep his tiny repair shop open? He answers with a watch from his drawer: a widow’s first present from her husband, which no other shop would touch because the parts stopped being made. Six months of evenings, no charge, and a yearly visit for a watch that is not really slow. About 500 characters inside HSK 1–5.

What Chopsticks Ask of You
An explanatory text on table manners. Why chopsticks are never stood upright in rice, why tapping a bowl was a beggar’s gesture, why you do not rummage through a shared dish or point with them — and the serving chopsticks that more restaurants now set out. It ends where a guest needs it to: nobody laughs at a visitor who cannot use them. About 520 characters inside HSK 1–5.
阅读 6 分钟culture - 站着开的会
A Meeting Held Standing Up
Every Monday at an advertising agency the meeting ran from nine to past eleven and settled nothing. A new manager says nothing at her first one, takes away the chairs and leaves three rules on the table: fifteen minutes, know your problem before you speak, end with who does what by when. Then an objection from the design department, and a compromise. About 550 characters inside HSK 1–5.
阅读 7 分钟work - 睡觉的时候,大脑在做什么
What the Brain Does While We Sleep
A short explanatory text in the style of the HSK 5 reading paper. Sleep is not the brain switching off: it sorts the day’s memories, keeping what is useful, and clears away substances that build up while we are awake. One experiment with two groups of students, the advice against staying up to revise, seven to eight hours for adults, and why quality counts as much as length. About 540 characters inside HSK 1–5.

常见问题
How many words does HSK 5 cover?
HSK Guide's curriculum record for HSK 5 states a cumulative target of 2,500 words, taken from Official HSK examination information — every word up to and including this level, of which 1,300 are new at HSK 5. This figure has been transcribed but not yet verified by an editor against the primary document, and HSK Guide labels it as such wherever it appears. HSK Guide currently holds 1,300 published entries labelled HSK 5, which are the words tagged at this level, so the figure to read them against is 1,300 rather than 2,500.
Is HSK 5 part of the same ladder as the other HSK levels?
HSK 5 belongs to the HSK 1–6(旧版) track. HSK Guide keeps each standard's vocabulary, grammar and level labels in a separate inventory, so a level number in one ladder is never treated as equivalent to the same number in another.
Can I practise HSK 5 for free?
Yes. At HSK 5 that means the 1,300-word HSK 5 list published on HSK Guide, the 18 grammar points filed under this level and the 6 graded texts on this page, all readable without signing in. The dictionary, the character explorer and the radical library are open without an account, and a daily allowance of reviews, quizzes and tutor messages is included on the free plan; Pro removes the daily limits. Published exam sets are abbreviated practice, not full-format examination simulations.
Does HSK Guide have a HSK 5 practice test?
Yes — one practice examination is published at this level. Every item is original material written for HSK Guide. It is not a past paper and is not endorsed by any examination authority.
Is HSK Guide affiliated with the HSK 5 examination?
No. HSK Guide is an independent preparation platform and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Chinese Testing International or the official HSK examination authorities. Registration, scoring and the current level requirements are decided by the examination authority — confirm them with your own test centre.
