How level labels work. A word belongs to a level through a separate membership record, one per standard, each carrying its own source. HSK Guide never merges the lists of two standards or renumbers one into the other — see how the inventories are kept apart.
Grammar library
Grammar patterns at HSK 3
Each pattern carries its structure formula, a plain-language explanation, sentences that are wrong and why, and a contrast with what it is usually confused with.
- Verbs with two objects: 给, 送, 教双宾语动词(给/送/教)
主语 + 动词 + 间接宾语(人)+ 直接宾语(物)
A few verbs take a person and a thing one after the other, with no preposition. The person always comes first.
transfer - If: 如果…(的话),就…“如果……(的话),就……”
如果/要是 + 条件(+ 的话),(主语)+ 就 + 结果
如果 opens the condition, optional 的话 closes it, and 就 opens the result. Chinese verbs never change shape for “if” — the frame does all the work.
condition - Reduplicated verbs: 看看, 试一试, 休息休息动词重叠
AA(看看) | A一A(看一看) | A了A(看了看,已发生) | ABAB(休息休息)
Saying the verb twice makes the action brief, light and unthreatening — “have a look”, “give it a try”. It is the standard way to soften a request.
aspect - Steps in order: 先…然后…再…“先……然后……再……”
(主语)+ 先 + 动词1,然后 + 动词2 | (主语)+ 先 + 动词1,(主语)+ 再 + 动词2
先 marks step one. 然后 opens the next clause; 再 does the same job from inside it, and is preferred for steps still to come.
sequence - Doing two things at once: 一边…一边…“一边……一边……”
主语 + 一边 + 动词1(+ 宾语),一边 + 动词2(+ 宾语)
One person, two activities running at the same time. Each 一边 attaches to its own verb, and both verbs must belong to the same subject.
simultaneity - Both this and that: 又…又…“又……又……”
(主语)+ 又 + A + 又 + B(A、B 为形容词或动词,褒贬一致)
Two qualities or two facts held at once, and they must pull the same way — both good or both bad. No 很 inside the frame.
description - 有点儿 or 一点儿: a bit too much, or a bit less“有点儿”和“一点儿”的区别
有点儿 + 形容词/心理动词(不如意)→ 状语,在前 | 形容词 + 一点儿 → 补语,在后 | (一)点儿 + 名词
Position tells them apart. 有点儿 goes *before* an adjective and complains about it; 一点儿 goes *after* an adjective to reduce it, or before a noun to mean “a little”.
degree - More and more: 越来越 and 越…越…“越来越……”和“越……越……”
主语 + 越来越 + 形容词/心理动词(+ 了) | (主语)+ 越 + A,(主语)+ 越 + B
越来越 says a quality keeps growing over time; 越 A 越 B links two scales — “the more A, the more B”. Neither takes 很.
degree - Not only… but also: 不但…而且…“不但……而且……”
主语 + 不但 + A,而且 + 还/也 + B(同一主语) | 不但 + 主语1 + A,而且 + 主语2 + 也 + B
Two facts pointing the same way, the second stronger than the first. Where the subject goes decides everything: same subject, it comes before 不但; different subjects, 不但 comes first.
addition - Besides and except: 除了…以外“除了……以外”
除了 + 名词/动词短语 + 以外,还/也 + …(包括) | 除了…以外,都 + …(排除)
除了…以外 sets one item aside. The second clause decides everything: 还/也 includes it and adds more, 都 excludes it from the rest.
inclusion - Degree complements: 他跑得很快程度补语(“V得 + 形容词”)
(主语)+ 动词 + 得 + 很/不 + 形容词 | (主语)+(宾语)+ 动词 + 得 + 形容词
得 + adjective judges how an action goes. Keep 很 as in any adjective sentence, negate the adjective rather than the verb, and repeat the verb when there is an object.
complements - Directional complements with 来 and 去简单趋向补语(来/去)
动词 + (处所宾语)+ 来/去
来 and 去 attach to a verb of movement to show which way it goes: 来 towards the speaker, 去 away. A place word slots in before them.
complements - 就 or 才: sooner than expected, or later“就”和“才”的区别
时间/条件 + 就 + 动词(+ 了)→ 早、快、容易 | 时间/条件 + 才 + 动词(无“了”)→ 晚、慢、费劲
The same slot, the opposite judgement. 就 says it happened early or easily; 才 says it happened late or only after effort — and a 才 sentence takes no final 了.
adverbs - Sentence-final 了: something has changed语气助词“了”(表示变化)
主语 + 谓语(+ 宾语)+ 了(新情况/变化)
A 了 at the very end of the sentence announces news: something is now true that was not true before.
aspect - Relative clauses with 的: the book I bought yesterday“的”字定语从句
(主语 +)动词短语 + 的 + 名词 | 指示词 + 量词 + 从句 + 的 + 名词
Everything that describes a noun comes before it, closed by 的. Chinese has no word for “who”, “which” or “that” — 的 does all the joining.
modification - Resultative complements: 完, 到, 见, 好结果补语(完/到/见/好)
动词 + 结果补语(完/到/见/好/懂/错)+ (了)+ 宾语
A Chinese verb only names the activity. Glue a second element onto it to say the action actually reached a result.
complements - The 是…的 frame: when, where and how it happened“是……的”句
主语 + (是)+ 时间/地点/方式/对象 + 动词 + 的(+ 宾语)
When both speakers already know the event happened, 是…的 asks or supplies the circumstances — when, where, how, with whom. The verb takes 的, never 了.
emphasis - As soon as: 一…就…“一……就……”
(主语)+ 一 + 动词1,(主语)+ 就 + 动词2
Two events with no gap between them: 一 marks the first verb, 就 marks the second. Both words are always kept.

A father tells the story of one Saturday: the family cycles to the park, the old men sing under the trees, his six-year-old wants to know the name of a bird nobody can identify, and they picnic in the shade. A Misunderstanding at the Post Office
Amine posts a birthday parcel to his mother in Morocco. Everything goes smoothly until the clerk says how long it will take: he hears 四十天 where she said 十四天, and panics about missing the birthday. Renting a Room
Amine wants to move out of the dormitory. A landlord shows him the fourth-floor room: south-facing, air conditioning, a small fridge, his own bathroom. Twenty-two turns inside HSK 1–3.

Mock examinations
Practice examinations available at HSK 3
Timed practice written for HSK Guide. The length, the timing and the scoring are our own practice settings rather than an official paper — every attempt ends with a gap analysis.
HSK 3 full practice paper
Eighty-five minutes in three parts — fourteen listening items, fourteen reading items and eight writing items — for learners working with 把, the 得 complement, result and direction complements, and two-clause connectors. The writing part asks you to build a sentence from its pieces and to produce the character behind a syllable, which is where reading knowledge and writing knowledge come apart. Everything here is original HSK Guide material. This is not an official paper: the length, the timing and the scoring are HSK Guide’s own practice settings.
Full mock examination85 minutes36 questionsHSK 3 grammar drill
Twenty minutes on structure alone, at third-level difficulty: 把, result and direction complements, 得 against 地, 一 … 就 …, 除了 … 以外 …, the double-object verbs and the paired connectors. Nothing here depends on understanding a passage, so a wrong answer points at one grammar point and nothing else. Everything is original HSK Guide material and this is not an official paper.
Section practice20 minutes20 questionsHSK 3 mini diagnostic
Thirty minutes of original HSK Guide practice items for learners moving past single-clause sentences. The material leans on the patterns that carry this level — 把, the 得 complement, two-clause connectors and comparison — and the listening is now made of exchanges rather than isolated lines. This is not an official paper, and the result is HSK Guide’s own estimate of where you stand, not an examination score.

hours
How long this level takes
The curriculum record for HSK 3 states a cumulative estimate of 260 study hours from a standing start. The table converts that into calendar time at three daily budgets.
| Daily study | Per week | Time to HSK 3 |
|---|---|---|
| 20 min | 2 hours | ~2 years |
| 45 min | 5 hours | ~50 weeks |
| 90 min | 11 hours | ~25 weeks |
An estimate, not a promise. It assumes you study on most days, that you are starting from no Chinese at all, and that review time is included. Learners with a background in another Chinese variety, or with characters already in place, routinely move faster. The placement test replaces this table with an estimate based on what you actually recall.
Frequently asked questions
How many words does HSK 3 cover?
HSK Guide's curriculum record for HSK 3 states a cumulative target of 600 words, taken from Official HSK examination information — every word up to and including this level, of which 300 are new at HSK 3. This figure has been transcribed but not yet verified by an editor against the primary document, and HSK Guide labels it as such wherever it appears. HSK Guide currently holds 295 published entries labelled HSK 3, which are the words tagged at this level, so the figure to read them against is 300 rather than 600.
Is HSK 3 part of the same ladder as the other HSK levels?
HSK 3 belongs to the HSK 1–4 (classic) track. HSK Guide keeps each standard's vocabulary, grammar and level labels in a separate inventory, so a level number in one ladder is never treated as equivalent to the same number in another.
Can I practise HSK 3 for free?
Yes. At HSK 3 that means the 295-word HSK 3 list published on HSK Guide, the 18 grammar points filed under this level and the 9 graded texts on this page, all readable without signing in. The dictionary, the character explorer and the radical library are open without an account, and a daily allowance of reviews, quizzes and tutor messages is included on the free plan; Pro removes the daily limits and unlocks the full mock examinations.
How long does it take to reach HSK 3?
The curriculum record states a cumulative estimate of 260 study hours from no Chinese at all — roughly 50 weeks at 45 minutes a day. It is an estimate rather than a promise, and the placement test replaces it with one based on what you actually recall.
Does HSK Guide have a HSK 3 practice test?
Yes — 3 practice examinations are published at this level. Every item is original material written for HSK Guide. It is not a past paper and is not endorsed by any examination authority.
Is HSK Guide affiliated with the HSK 3 examination?
No. HSK Guide is an independent preparation platform and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Chinese Testing International or the official HSK examination authorities. Registration, scoring and the current level requirements are decided by the examination authority — confirm them with your own test centre.
Are you actually at HSK 3?
The placement test measures vocabulary, listening, reading, grammar and tones, then builds your first seven days.
