Explanation

Chinese words in this text can be activated to show a dictionary gloss.

On its own, a Chinese verb says nothing about how the action turned out. is “to look”, is “to listen”, is “to look for” — none of them promises success. To say the action reached a result, a second element is glued directly onto the verb: “finish reading”, “catch sight of”, “read and understand”, “find”, “hear”, “get written”. The most useful complements are (finished), (attained, reached), (perceived), (done, ready), (understood) and (got it wrong). Verb and complement behave as one word, so nothing may come between them: and the object follow the pair — — and is impossible. The negative is , because what is being denied is that the result came about: “I haven’t finished the book.” would be a refusal, not a report. Once the pattern is comfortable, the same complements slot into the potential forms “can finish” and “can’t finish”, which are the natural next step.

Correct

Say each one out loud before moving on. The audio is a reference pronunciation, not a model to imitate exactly — match the tone contour, not the voice.

  • 我看完了这本书。我看完了這本書。

(third tone, dipping) kànwánle (fourth tone, falling) zhè (fourth tone, falling) běn (third tone, dipping) shū. (first tone, high and level)···

    I’ve finished this book.

  • 你听见他说的话了吗?你聽見他說的話了嗎?

(third tone, dipping) tīngjiàn (first tone, high and level) (first tone, high and level) shuō (first tone, high and level) de (neutral tone) huà (fourth tone, falling) le (neutral tone) ma? (neutral tone)···

Did you hear what he said?

  • 我没找到我的手机。我沒找到我的手機。

IncorrectCommon mistakes

These sentences are wrong. They are printed here on purpose, each one paired with the repair and the reason, because the error you can recognise is the error you stop making.

  • Not quite

    Incorrect sentence: 我看了完这本书。

    Correct

    Correct sentence: 我看完了这本书。

Why: Verb and complement form one unit. 了 goes after the whole unit, never inside it.

  • Not quite

    Incorrect sentence: 我不看完这本书。

    Correct

    Correct sentence: 我没看完这本书。

Why: What is being denied is that the result was reached, and that always takes 没. 不看完 would announce a refusal to finish.

  • Not quite

    Incorrect sentence: 我找了我的手机,可是没找。

    Correct

    Correct sentence: 我找了我的手机,可是没找到。

Why: The bare verb 找 only names the searching. Without 到 the sentence never says whether the phone turned up.

Most errors with this pattern are not errors about this pattern — they are a neighbouring pattern arriving at the wrong moment. Read these side by side.

结果补语(完/到/见/好)“把”字句

This pattern is the missing piece in most broken 把 sentences. 把 insists that the verb say what became of the object, and a resultative complement is the commonest way to supply that: 我把作业写完了, 请把门关上, 他把杯子打破了. If a 把 sentence still feels unfinished, the repair is almost always a complement after the verb rather than a longer object.
