Explanation

Chinese words in this text can be activated to show a dictionary gloss.

… (yìbiān…yìbiān…) says that one person is doing two things in the same stretch of time: “He watches TV while he eats.” Each stands directly in front of its own verb, after the subject — the subject is mentioned once, at the very start.

The single most important restriction is that both actions belong to the same person. For two different people acting at once, Chinese uses or instead: . Writing is not a stylistic slip; it is ungrammatical.

Both verbs also have to be activities that last. and are fine; instantaneous verbs such as , , cannot be spread across time and do not fit the frame.

In casual speech the pattern is often shortened to …: . And for a posture held while doing something else, Chinese prefers rather than : “He spoke standing up”, not .

The pattern says nothing about tense. Add or a time word if you need it: .

Say each one out loud before moving on. The audio is a reference pronunciation, not a model to imitate exactly — match the tone contour, not the voice.

IncorrectCommon mistakes

These sentences are wrong. They are printed here on purpose, each one paired with the repair and the reason, because the error you can recognise is the error you stop making.

  • Not quite

    Incorrect sentence: 他一边吃饭,她一边看电视。

    Correct

    Correct sentence: 他吃饭的时候,她在看电视。

Why: 一边…一边… needs one subject doing both things. Two different people at the same moment call for 的时候 or 同时.

  • Not quite

    Incorrect sentence: 他一边吃饭看电视。

    Correct

    Correct sentence: 他一边吃饭一边看电视。

Why: The second 一边 is not optional. Each verb carries its own, exactly as each half of 因为…所以… carries its own connective.

  • Not quite

    Incorrect sentence: 一边他吃饭,一边看电视。

    Correct

    Correct sentence: 他一边吃饭,一边看电视。

Why: 一边 modifies the verb, not the sentence, so it comes after the subject — never in front of it.

“一边……一边……”“(正)在……呢”表示动作进行

在 and 一边…一边… both describe something in progress, but they answer different questions. 在 says that a single action is under way right now: 他在吃饭 “He’s eating.” 一边…一边… says that two actions overlap: 他一边吃饭一边看电视. You cannot stack them — 他在一边吃饭一边看电视 is redundant, because the frame already places both actions in the same running moment. If only one activity is involved, 在 is the right tool; the moment a second activity shares the time slot, switch to 一边…一边….

Actions in progress: 正在 / 在 … 呢
