Reduplicated verbs: 看看, 试一试, 休息休息
Saying the verb twice makes the action brief, light and unthreatening — “have a look”, “give it a try”. It is the standard way to soften a request.
Structure
AA(看看) | A一A(看一看) | A了A(看了看,已发生) | ABAB(休息休息)
Explanation
Chinese words in this text can be activated to show a dictionary gloss.
A repeated verb makes the action small: “Have a look at this photo”, “Let me try.” Nothing about the meaning of the verb changes; what changes is the weight of the request or the offer, which becomes casual and easy to refuse. This is why reduplication is everywhere in polite speech.
The shape depends on the verb. One-syllable verbs simply double — , , — and may take in the middle: , . The second syllable is unstressed: kànkan, shìshi. Two-syllable verbs repeat as a whole, ABAB: , , . They never break into AABB, which is the pattern for adjectives ().
For an action already completed, goes in the middle: , “He thought for a moment, then answered.” With two-syllable verbs this is rare.
does almost the same work and is interchangeable in most sentences: ≈ , ≈ . What you cannot do is use both at once — is wrong.
Not every verb can be reduplicated. Verbs that describe a state rather than an activity refuse it: , , , , , . You can a photo but you cannot a fact. Reduplicated verbs also do not combine with or , and they do not take complements: is impossible.
An object simply follows the whole reduplicated block: , .
Correct
Say each one out loud before moving on. The audio is a reference pronunciation, not a model to imitate exactly — match the tone contour, not the voice.

Incorrect — Common mistakes
These sentences are wrong. They are printed here on purpose, each one paired with the repair and the reason, because the error you can recognise is the error you stop making.
Not quite
Incorrect sentence: 我们休休息息吧。
Correct
Correct sentence: 我们休息休息吧。
Why: Two-syllable verbs repeat as a whole block (ABAB). Splitting them into AABB is the pattern for adjectives, not verbs.
Not quite
Incorrect sentence: 你看看一下这本书。
Correct
Correct sentence: 你看看这本书。
Why: Reduplication and 一下 do the same job, so only one of them appears. Either 看看 or 看一下.
Not quite
Incorrect sentence: 我知道知道这件事。
Correct
Correct sentence: 我知道这件事。
Why: 知道 describes a state, not an activity you can do briefly. Verbs of knowing, liking and being cannot be reduplicated.

Most errors with this pattern are not errors about this pattern — they are a neighbouring pattern arriving at the wrong moment. Read these side by side.
Both are softeners, and both are built on “a little”, but they attach to different word classes. Verb reduplication softens an *action*: 你看看, 我想想, 休息休息. 一点儿 softens a *quantity or a quality*, and it follows an adjective: 说慢一点儿, 便宜一点儿. So a polite request often uses both at once, each in its own slot: 你说说,慢一点儿. What you must not do is treat them as interchangeable — 你一点儿看 and 说说慢 are both impossible.
