Where the shape comes from
A curved roof tile shown in cross-section, the overlapping curve that sheds rain — the same shape, by extension, for anything shaped on a potter’s wheel from clay. It sits under 瓷, porcelain, and under 瓶, a bottle, jar, both naming the fired clay vessels of the potter’s craft that once shared the kiln with roof tiles themselves.
