Where the shape comes from
A melon hanging from its curling vine, the fruit’s round body and the tendril that anchors it both visible in the strokes. It names melons and gourds directly in 木瓜, papaya, and 丝瓜, loofah, and lends only its sound to 孤, alone, orphaned, a character otherwise built from 子, a child.
