Where the shape comes from
A mouth 口 with a short stroke laid across it, marking something held on the tongue and savoured rather than swallowed at once — the taste held closest to sweet. It joins 舌, tongue, in 甜, sweet, and names the plant itself in 甘蔗, sugarcane, the cane whose juice gave the character its everyday sense.
