Mnemonic
The sun was drawn as a circle with a dot at the centre; a brush working down a narrow column flattened the circle into a rectangle and the dot into a bar. Keep it taller than the mouth 口 and give it exactly one bar — two bars would make the eye 目. In dates it is the written form: 十月一日, where speech says 一号.
