Where the shape comes from
Two X-shapes crossed and stacked, the broken and unbroken lines of divination doubled to show them changing into one another — the pattern read for chance and pattern in the Yijing’s hexagrams. Hands manipulating a pair of these crossed counting or divining sticks above a child give the top of 学, to learn, study; the same crossed pattern marked clearly on a chest gives 爽, bright, clear, refreshing.
