Where the shape comes from
The mirror-image left half of a tree trunk split down the middle, its twin 片 taking the right half. Standing for solid, worked timber, it once wrote 牀, a bed built of planking, on its own before 木 was added back for clarity to give today’s 床; simplified to 丬, it survives as the left-hand sliver of 状, a shape or condition, and 将, to be about to, a general.
