Where the shape comes from
A claw or paw print pressed into soft ground, the toes splayed as an animal’s track. Genuinely rare as an independent word today, it survives chiefly inside 禹, the name of the legendary emperor said to have tamed the great flood by tracking and channelling its waters, and as a dictionary classifier for a short list of characters connected, however distantly, to tracks and prints.
