Where the shape comes from

A stone altar table: the slab on top, the two legs below, and the strokes at the sides for the libation running down. What appeared at the altar was taken as a sign, which is how the word came to mean "to show". On the left of a character it thins to 礻, and it heads the vocabulary of ritual and fortune: 礼, 祝, 神, 福, 社, 票. Count the dots — 礻 has one, the clothing radical 衤 has two.
