Where the shape comes from

A stake driven into the ground, or by another reading a hunter’s arrow trailing a cord so that a downed bird could be reeled back in. Little used to write its own meaning today, it mostly lends its sound to other characters, 式 among them, a pattern or formula, and survives on its own chiefly in 游弋, to cruise or patrol, an old image of a boat casting about the way that corded arrow once did.
