Where the shape comes from

A length of cloth hanging from a sash: the horizontal is the belt, and what falls below it is the cloth with its central fold. It marks textiles and the things cut from them: 布, 带, 帽, 常 — and 毛巾, the towel, is literally the napped cloth.
