Where the shape comes from
A tall stemmed vessel for presenting food at a ceremony, base, stem and bowl all visible — a shape whose round bowl later lent its outline to the word for a bean, the ritual dish’s original sense fading as the new one took hold. It names beans, peas, in 土豆, a potato, and 豆腐, tofu, and lends its round shape to 痘, pox, a pustule shaped like the bean it is named after.
