Moving into the Student Dormitory

The building you will live in and the person at the desk who runs it: checking in and paying the deposit, getting a card that opens the door, reporting the things that break, paying for electricity, collecting parcels and signing a friend in.

In the order you are likely to need them. Play each one, repeat it, and read the note underneath — knowing when to say a sentence matters as much as saying it correctly.

(third tone, dipping) hǎo, (third tone, dipping) (third tone, dipping) lái (second tone, rising) bàn (fourth tone, falling) rùzhù (fourth tone, falling) shǒuxù. (third tone, dipping)

Hello, I have come to check in.

Your opening line at the dormitory desk on the day you arrive. 入住 (rùzhù) is the word for moving in, and it separates you from the students who are only asking a question.

Zhè (fourth tone, falling) shì (fourth tone, falling) (third tone, dipping) de (neutral tone) xuéshēngzhèng (second tone, rising) (second tone, rising) hùzhào. (fourth tone, falling)

Here are my student card and my passport.

Say it as you hand both over. The 学生证 proves you belong to the university and the passport proves who you are; the desk usually wants to see the two together.

Qǐngwèn, (third tone, dipping) yājīn (first tone, high and level) shì (fourth tone, falling) duōshao? (first tone, high and level) Shénme (second tone, rising) shíhou (second tone, rising) kěyǐ (third tone, dipping) tuì? (fourth tone, falling)

Excuse me, how much is the deposit, and when can I get it back?

Ask both halves in one breath, before you pay. A 押金 (yājīn) is a refundable deposit, not a fee, and the answer to the second question tells you what receipt to keep and for how long.

Qǐngwèn, (third tone, dipping) sùshèlóu (fourth tone, falling) (third tone, dipping) diǎn (third tone, dipping) guānmén? (first tone, high and level)

Excuse me, what time does the dormitory building close?

Ask on day one, not the first night you come home late. Many buildings lock the main door at a set hour, and the answer decides how you plan your evenings.

Qǐngwèn, (third tone, dipping) zhèr (fourth tone, falling) de (neutral tone) wúxiànwǎng (second tone, rising) mìmǎ (fourth tone, falling) shì (fourth tone, falling) duōshao? (first tone, high and level)

Excuse me, what is the wi-fi password here?

Ask at the desk while you are still there with your documents. In speech most people simply say WiFi 密码; 无线网 is the written form you will see on the notice.

(third tone, dipping) de (neutral tone) fángkǎ (second tone, rising) shuā (first tone, high and level) bu (neutral tone) kāi (first tone, high and level) mén, (second tone, rising) máfan (second tone, rising) nín (second tone, rising) bāng (first tone, high and level) (third tone, dipping) kàn (fourth tone, falling) yíxià. (second tone, rising)

My key card will not open the door — could you take a look at it for me, please.

The sentence for the evening the card stops working. 刷不开 is the potential form of 刷开 (to swipe open) and says the card is swiping but nothing happens, which is more useful than saying it is broken.

Wǒmen (third tone, dipping) fángjiān (second tone, rising) méiyǒu (second tone, rising) rèshuǐ (fourth tone, falling) le. (neutral tone)

There is no hot water in our room any more.

Report it at the desk the same day. The 了 at the end marks the change — there was hot water and now there is none — which is exactly the information that gets an engineer sent up.

Kōngtiáo (first tone, high and level) huài (fourth tone, falling) le, (neutral tone) qǐngwèn (third tone, dipping) zài (fourth tone, falling) nǎlǐ (third tone, dipping) bàoxiū? (fourth tone, falling)

The air conditioner is broken — where do I report it for repair?

报修 (bàoxiū) is the exact word for logging a repair, and every dormitory has a procedure for it — a book at the desk, a phone number, or a form in the campus app. Ask which one applies to your building.

Qǐngwèn, (third tone, dipping) xǐyīfáng (third tone, dipping) zài (fourth tone, falling) (third tone, dipping) lóu? (second tone, rising) Zěnme (third tone, dipping) yòng? (fourth tone, falling)

Excuse me, which floor is the laundry room on, and how do the machines work?

Ask both at once. Machines are usually started from a phone app or a card rather than with coins, and the second half of the question is the part that saves you standing there puzzled.

Qǐngwèn, (third tone, dipping) fángjiān (second tone, rising) (third tone, dipping) kěyǐ (third tone, dipping) yòng (fourth tone, falling) diàncílú (fourth tone, falling) ma? (neutral tone)

Excuse me, am I allowed to use an induction hotplate in the room?

Ask before you buy one. High-power appliances — hotplates, kettles, heaters — are restricted in many dormitories for fire safety, and the rules differ from building to building.

Qǐngwèn, (third tone, dipping) diànfèi (fourth tone, falling) zěnme (third tone, dipping) jiāo? (first tone, high and level)

Excuse me, how do I pay for electricity?

Ask in the first week. Rooms are often on a prepaid meter that you top up yourself, and the lights going out mid-evening is how most students discover this.

(third tone, dipping) de (neutral tone) kuàidì (fourth tone, falling) dào (fourth tone, falling) le, (neutral tone) qǐngwèn (third tone, dipping) zài (fourth tone, falling) nǎlǐ (third tone, dipping) qǔ? (third tone, dipping)

My parcel has arrived — where do I collect it?

Couriers rarely come to the room. Parcels go to a locker bank or a campus collection point, and you show the code from the text message; 快递 (kuàidì) covers both the courier and the parcel itself.

(third tone, dipping) péngyou (second tone, rising) xiǎng (third tone, dipping) lái (second tone, rising) zhǎo (third tone, dipping) wǒ, (third tone, dipping) xūyào (first tone, high and level) dēngjì (first tone, high and level) ma? (neutral tone)

A friend of mine wants to come and see me — do they need to register?

Ask before the visit rather than at the door with your friend standing next to you. Most dormitories log visitors against an ID card and set an hour by which they must leave.

A Chinese dormitory is a managed building, not a set of private flats. There is a desk just inside the entrance, staffed day and night, and the person behind it — usually called or addressed simply as for an older woman and otherwise — controls keys, visitors, parcels and repairs. Being on good terms with that desk makes the rest of the year easier. On the day you move in you pay a (yājīn): a refundable deposit held against damage and the return of the key or card, given back when you move out and hand the room over, provided nothing is broken. Keep the receipt somewhere you will still find it a year later, because that piece of paper is what you exchange for the money. Rooms are usually shared, twin or four-bed, with a shared bathroom on the corridor in older buildings and an ensuite in newer ones; furniture is fixed and moving beds between rooms is generally not allowed. Electricity is frequently on a prepaid meter topped up through an app or at the desk, and hot water may run only at certain hours in older blocks — ask rather than assume. High-power appliances are restricted for fire safety, and the ban is enforced by inspection. The main door closes at a set hour in many buildings; some let residents in later with a card, some do not. Visitors are signed in at the desk against an ID and expected to leave by a stated time, and overnight guests are usually not permitted. All of this varies between universities and even between blocks on the same campus: the notice board by the desk is the authority for your building, and the will explain it if you ask politely.

These notes describe common practice, not rules. Requirements and procedures differ between cities, institutions and years — confirm anything procedural with the office, clinic or company itself.
