Police and Emergencies

The sentences you hope not to need: calling for help, saying where you are, reporting a theft or a lost passport, describing an accident, and asking for the paper the police give you afterwards.

13 必备表达

必备表达

In the order you are likely to need them. Play each one, repeat it, and read the note underneath — knowing when to say a sentence matters as much as saying it correctly.

  1. 救命!

    Jiùmìng! (fourth tone, falling)

    Help!

    什么时候用

The single word that makes strangers turn round. Shout it; it is not used for small troubles, so it carries.

  2. 这里有人受伤了,快打 120!這裡有人受傷了,快打 120!

Zhèlǐ (fourth tone, falling) yǒu (third tone, dipping) rén (second tone, rising) shòushāng (fourth tone, falling) le, (neutral tone) kuài (fourth tone, falling) (third tone, dipping) yāo (first tone, high and level) èr (fourth tone, falling) líng! (second tone, rising)

Someone here is injured — call 120 quickly!

    什么时候用

120 is the number for an ambulance. Note that in phone numbers the digit 1 is read 幺 (yāo) rather than 一, so 120 is said yāo èr líng — say it that way and you will be understood at once.

  3. 着火了!快打 119!著火了!快打 119!

Zháohuǒ (second tone, rising) le! (neutral tone) Kuài (fourth tone, falling) (third tone, dipping) yāo (first tone, high and level) yāo (first tone, high and level) jiǔ! (third tone, dipping)

    Fire! Call 119 quickly!

    什么时候用

119 is the fire brigade. 着火了 (zháohuǒ le) means “a fire has started”; in a dormitory corridor, shouting it as you knock on doors is more useful than looking for the alarm.

  4. 我要报警,请帮我打 110。我要報警,請幫我打 110。

(third tone, dipping) yào (fourth tone, falling) bàojǐng, (fourth tone, falling) qǐng (third tone, dipping) bāng (first tone, high and level) (third tone, dipping) (third tone, dipping) yāo (first tone, high and level) yāo (first tone, high and level) líng. (second tone, rising)

I need to call the police — please dial 110 for me.

    什么时候用

110 is the police number. 报警 (bàojǐng) means to report something to the police; asking a passer-by or a shopkeeper to make the call for you is entirely normal when your own Chinese is not up to a phone conversation.

  5. 我的钱包和手机被偷了。我的錢包和手機被偷了。

(third tone, dipping) de (neutral tone) qiánbāo (second tone, rising) (second tone, rising) shǒujī (third tone, dipping) bèi (fourth tone, falling) tōu (first tone, high and level) le. (neutral tone)

My wallet and my phone have been stolen.

    什么时候用

The 被 pattern makes it passive — the thing happened to you — and it is the sentence a police officer needs first. 丢了 (diū le) means lost by accident, so choose the verb that matches what happened.

  6. 我的护照丢了,怎么办?我的護照丟了,怎麼辦?

(third tone, dipping) de (neutral tone) hùzhào (fourth tone, falling) diū (first tone, high and level) le, (neutral tone) zěnme (third tone, dipping) bàn? (fourth tone, falling)

I have lost my passport — what should I do?

    什么时候用

Say it at the nearest 派出所, the local police station. 怎么办 asks for the procedure rather than for sympathy, and the officer will tell you the order of the steps that follow.

  7. 我在人民路和中山路的路口。

(third tone, dipping) zài (fourth tone, falling) Rénmín (second tone, rising) (fourth tone, falling) (second tone, rising) Zhōngshān (first tone, high and level) (fourth tone, falling) de (neutral tone) lùkǒu. (fourth tone, falling)

I am at the junction of Renmin Road and Zhongshan Road.

    什么时候用

How to give a location fast on the phone: two street names and 路口 (junction). If you cannot read the street signs, say the name of a shop or a metro exit instead — 我在地铁二号线 B 出口.

  8. 我住在学校的留学生宿舍,十八号楼。我住在學校的留學生宿舍,十八號樓。

(third tone, dipping) zhù (fourth tone, falling) zài (fourth tone, falling) xuéxiào (second tone, rising) de (neutral tone) liúxuéshēng (second tone, rising) sùshè, (fourth tone, falling) shíbā (second tone, rising) hào (fourth tone, falling) lóu. (second tone, rising)

I live in the international students’ dormitory at the university, building eighteen.

    什么时候用

You will be asked for your address at the police station, and the answer has to be specific. Learn your building number by heart and keep the full address written in characters on your phone.

  9. 我被车撞了,腿很疼。我被車撞了,腿很疼。

(third tone, dipping) bèi (fourth tone, falling) chē (first tone, high and level) zhuàng (fourth tone, falling) le, (neutral tone) tuǐ (third tone, dipping) hěn (third tone, dipping) téng. (second tone, rising)

I have been hit by a car — my leg hurts badly.

    什么时候用

Two pieces of information in one breath: what happened and where it hurts. Say it to whoever reaches you first; the same sentence works on the phone and to the ambulance crew.

  10. 我中文不太好,有会说英语的人吗?我中文不太好,有會說英語的人嗎?

(third tone, dipping) Zhōngwén (first tone, high and level) (second tone, rising) tài (fourth tone, falling) hǎo, (third tone, dipping) yǒu (third tone, dipping) huì (fourth tone, falling) shuō (first tone, high and level) Yīngyǔ (first tone, high and level) de (neutral tone) rén (second tone, rising) ma? (neutral tone)

My Chinese is not very good — is there someone here who speaks English?

    什么时候用

Ask it early at the police station, calmly, before the questions start. Saying it in Chinese shows you can follow simple instructions, which changes how the conversation is pitched even if nobody speaks English.

  11. 请问,可以开一份报案证明吗?請問,可以開一份報案證明嗎?

Qǐngwèn, (third tone, dipping) kěyǐ (third tone, dipping) kāi (first tone, high and level) (second tone, rising) fèn (fourth tone, falling) bào (fourth tone, falling) àn (fourth tone, falling) zhèngmíng (fourth tone, falling) ma? (neutral tone)

Excuse me, could I have a written confirmation that I reported this?

    什么时候用

Ask before you leave the station, not days later. This is the paper an insurer asks for after a theft and an embassy asks for before replacing a passport, so take a photograph of it as well.

  12. 我想联系我们国家的大使馆。我想聯繫我們國家的大使館。

(third tone, dipping) xiǎng (third tone, dipping) liánxì (second tone, rising) wǒmen (third tone, dipping) guójiā (second tone, rising) de (neutral tone) dàshǐguǎn. (fourth tone, falling)

I would like to contact my country’s embassy.

    什么时候用

Say it plainly and without apology; it is a normal request and the officer will not be surprised. Keep the embassy or consulate number saved in your phone and written on paper before you ever need it.

  13. 这是我护照的复印件。這是我護照的複印件。

Zhè (fourth tone, falling) shì (fourth tone, falling) (third tone, dipping) hùzhào (fourth tone, falling) de (neutral tone) fùyìnjiàn. (fourth tone, falling)

This is a photocopy of my passport.

    什么时候用

What you hand over when the original is exactly what has gone missing. Keep a paper copy of the photo page, the visa and the residence permit somewhere separate from the passport itself, plus photographs on your phone.

文化提示

Three short numbers cover emergencies: 110 for the police, 120 for an ambulance and 119 for the fire brigade. They are free from any phone and the operators work in Chinese, so if your own Chinese is not steady, ask a passer-by, a shopkeeper or the dormitory desk to make the call while you stay where you are. In phone numbers the digit 1 is pronounced (yāo) rather than , which is why you hear yāo yāo líng rather than yī yī líng. Everyday police work is done by the , the neighbourhood police station: this is where you report a theft, a lost passport or a lost phone, and where address registration for foreign residents is handled. Registering the address you live at with the local station is a requirement for foreigners; a hotel does it automatically when you check in, and universities usually handle it for students living in the dormitory — ask your international office whether yours has, rather than assuming, and ask again if you move. After a theft, ask for the written confirmation of your report before you leave; insurers and embassies both want it, and it is much harder to obtain later. If the passport itself is gone, the sequence is normally the police station first, then your embassy or consulate for a replacement travel document, then the exit-entry administration for a new visa or residence permit — allow days, not hours, and start with the police report. Keep photocopies and phone photographs of the passport photo page, the visa and the residence permit, and keep your university’s emergency contact and your embassy’s number written somewhere that does not depend on a phone battery. Details of the procedure differ by city and change over time, so treat the officer at the desk, and your international office, as the authority rather than an account you read online.

These notes describe common practice, not rules. Requirements and procedures differ between cities, institutions and years — confirm anything procedural with the office, clinic or company itself.
