At the Pharmacy and the Hospital

How to get seen and get treated: registering at the 挂号 desk, naming a department, describing symptoms clearly, declaring an allergy, understanding the dosage and asking for the receipt your insurer will want.

13 必备表达

必备表达

In the order you are likely to need them. Play each one, repeat it, and read the note underneath — knowing when to say a sentence matters as much as saying it correctly.

  1. 请问,挂号在哪里?請問,掛號在哪裡?

Qǐngwèn, (third tone, dipping) guàhào (fourth tone, falling) zài (fourth tone, falling) nǎlǐ? (third tone, dipping)

Excuse me, where do I register?

    什么时候用

The first sentence you say on entering a hospital. 挂号 (guàhào) is the desk where you sign up to see a doctor, and nothing else happens until you have been through it.

  2. 我要挂内科,谢谢。我要掛內科,謝謝。

(third tone, dipping) yào (fourth tone, falling) guà (fourth tone, falling) nèikē, (fourth tone, falling) xièxie. (fourth tone, falling)

I would like to register for internal medicine, thank you.

    什么时候用

You are asked to name a department, not a complaint. 内科 (internal medicine) covers fevers, colds, stomach trouble and most general illness; 外科 is surgery and injuries.

  3. 我没有医保卡,可以用护照挂号吗?我沒有醫保卡,可以用護照掛號嗎?

(third tone, dipping) méiyǒu (second tone, rising) yībǎokǎ, (first tone, high and level) kěyǐ (third tone, dipping) yòng (fourth tone, falling) hùzhào (fourth tone, falling) guàhào (fourth tone, falling) ma? (neutral tone)

I do not have a health insurance card — can I register with my passport?

    什么时候用

Say it at the registration window if you are asked for a card you do not have. Carry your passport to any medical appointment.

  4. 我不舒服,从昨天开始发烧。我不舒服,從昨天開始發燒。

(third tone, dipping) (fourth tone, falling) shūfu, (first tone, high and level) cóng (second tone, rising) zuótiān (second tone, rising) kāishǐ (first tone, high and level) fāshāo. (first tone, high and level)

I am unwell — I have had a fever since yesterday.

    什么时候用

Your opening line to the doctor. Giving the symptom and its starting point in one sentence is exactly what is asked for first.

  5. 我肚子疼,也拉肚子。

(third tone, dipping) dùzi (fourth tone, falling) téng, (second tone, rising) (third tone, dipping) (first tone, high and level) dùzi. (fourth tone, falling)

I have stomach pain, and diarrhoea as well.

    什么时候用

The commonest complaint in a learner’s first months abroad. 疼 (téng) is the everyday word for pain: point at the place and say X 疼.

  6. 我咳嗽,嗓子很疼。

(third tone, dipping) késou, (second tone, rising) sǎngzi (third tone, dipping) hěn (third tone, dipping) téng. (second tone, rising)

I have a cough and a very sore throat.

    什么时候用

Use it at the doctor’s or straight over a pharmacy counter — a pharmacist will normally ask about symptoms before suggesting anything.

  7. 我对青霉素过敏。我對青黴素過敏。

(third tone, dipping) duì (fourth tone, falling) qīngméisù (first tone, high and level) guòmǐn. (fourth tone, falling)

    I am allergic to penicillin.

    什么时候用

Say it unprompted, before any medicine is discussed, and repeat it at the dispensary. Substitute whatever you are actually allergic to; the pattern 我对⋯⋯过敏 works for foods too.

  8. 请问,先缴费还是先看病?請問,先繳費還是先看病?

Qǐngwèn, (third tone, dipping) xiān (first tone, high and level) jiǎofèi (third tone, dipping) háishi (second tone, rising) xiān (first tone, high and level) kànbìng? (fourth tone, falling)

Excuse me, do I pay first or see the doctor first?

    什么时候用

Ask it at the registration desk. Hospitals commonly send you to a 缴费 window between steps, and knowing the order stops you queueing twice for nothing.

  9. 请问,取药在哪个窗口?請問,取藥在哪個窗口?

Qǐngwèn, (third tone, dipping) (third tone, dipping) yào (fourth tone, falling) zài (fourth tone, falling) nǎge (third tone, dipping) chuāngkǒu? (first tone, high and level)

Excuse me, which window do I collect the medicine from?

    什么时候用

Ask after the consultation, receipt in hand. Hospital dispensaries often have several windows, sometimes split between 西药 and 中药.

  10. 这个药一天吃几次?一次吃几片?這個藥一天吃幾次?一次吃幾片?

Zhège (fourth tone, falling) yào (fourth tone, falling) (fourth tone, falling) tiān (first tone, high and level) chī (first tone, high and level) (third tone, dipping) cì? (fourth tone, falling) (second tone, rising) (fourth tone, falling) chī (first tone, high and level) (third tone, dipping) piàn? (fourth tone, falling)

How many times a day do I take this medicine, and how many tablets each time?

    什么时候用

Ask at the dispensary window before you walk away, and ask for it written down if you are unsure. 片 (piàn) counts tablets; 包 (bāo) counts sachets of powder.

  11. 饭前吃还是饭后吃?飯前吃還是飯後吃?

Fàn (fourth tone, falling) qián (second tone, rising) chī (first tone, high and level) háishi (second tone, rising) fàn (fourth tone, falling) hòu (fourth tone, falling) chī? (first tone, high and level)

Do I take it before meals or after meals?

    什么时候用

The natural follow-up question at the dispensary, and the one most often missed. The same two phrases appear printed on the packet.

  12. 我想要西药,不想吃中药。我想要西藥,不想吃中藥。

(third tone, dipping) xiǎng (third tone, dipping) yào (fourth tone, falling) xīyào, (first tone, high and level) (fourth tone, falling) xiǎng (third tone, dipping) chī (first tone, high and level) zhōngyào. (first tone, high and level)

I would like Western medicine — I would rather not take Chinese medicine.

    什么时候用

A preference worth stating plainly, since both are prescribed side by side. Reverse it if you want the opposite; either way it is treated as an ordinary request, not a rebuff.

  13. 请问,可以开发票吗?我要给保险公司。請問,可以開發票嗎?我要給保險公司。

Qǐngwèn, (third tone, dipping) kěyǐ (third tone, dipping) kāi (first tone, high and level) fāpiào (first tone, high and level) ma? (neutral tone) (third tone, dipping) yào (fourth tone, falling) gěi (third tone, dipping) bǎoxiǎn (third tone, dipping) gōngsī. (first tone, high and level)

Excuse me, could I have an official receipt? It is for my insurance company.

    什么时候用

Ask at the payment window, at the time you pay. A 发票 (fāpiào) is the official receipt insurers ask for, and it is far harder to obtain days later.

文化提示

A Chinese hospital visit runs as a circuit of counters rather than an appointment with one person. You start at (guàhào) — a desk or a self-service machine — where you choose a department and pay a registration fee, and receive a slip with a number. Choosing the department is on you, so it helps to know that is internal medicine, surgery, paediatrics, dermatology and ear, nose and throat; if in doubt, describe your symptom at the desk and let the staff route you. Between steps you are usually sent to a (jiǎofèi) window to pay for tests or medicine before they are carried out or handed over, then to to collect. Pharmacies, both inside hospitals and on the street, keep (Western medicine) and or (Chinese medicine, including ready-made pills and herb packets) as separate categories, often at separate counters — say which you want, because in blister packs can look identical to anything else. Street pharmacies are common, stay open late, and the pharmacist will ask about your symptoms and suggest something for minor complaints. Bring your passport, keep every , and state allergies out loud at each stage rather than assuming they were written down. Exactly which services a foreign student can use, and what a given insurance policy reimburses, differs by city and by policy — ask your university’s international office before you need it.

These notes describe common practice, not rules. Requirements and procedures differ between cities, institutions and years — confirm anything procedural with the office, clinic or company itself.
