Where the shape comes from
The field 田 set over the earth 土: ground that has been measured out and settled, which is a village and also the distance from one village to the next. It heads 重 heavy, 野 open country and 量 to measure. One caution for readers of traditional texts: the 里 of 这里 and 里面 is a separate word there, written 裏 or 裡 with the clothing radical — simplified writing merged the two onto this one shape.
