Where the shape comes from

A small table seen from the side: the flat top and the two legs, the right one turned out to hold the weight. It is the stand under 凭 and the frame inside 凡, and the narrowed form ⺇ is the one that shelters 风 and 凤. Simplified writing then loaded the same two strokes with 幾, so 几 is now also the jǐ of 几个 and 几点 — one shape, two unrelated words, told apart by tone and by context.
