Where the shape comes from
A hand pulling a hide free from the flesh beneath it, the animal’s skin shown peeling away under the fingers — the whole scene of tanning reduced to one gesture. It names skin, hide, fur directly in 皮肤, skin, and lends its sound to 破, to break, split, and 被, a quilt, and the marker of the passive voice, both keeping only the hide’s sound and losing its picture.
