Where the shape comes from
A person kneeling in submission, seen from the side — the posture of receiving an order or presenting a tally for inspection. A hand pressing down on the kneeling figure gives 印, to press, a seal, from an officer’s seal stamped by hand; the same figure turning away gives 却, to retreat, to decline; and curled under something being rolled over it gives 卷, to roll up, a scroll.
