Where the shape comes from
A grain plant 禾 shown together with scattered drops of liquid, since millet was the grain most often fermented into wine in early China, the two elements — the crop and what it became — pictured side by side. Once one of the five sacred grains of ancient agriculture, it survives today mostly in agricultural and historical vocabulary, its everyday role in the kitchen long since given over to rice and wheat.
