Where the shape comes from
The same figure as 人, but drawn with the legs left open so that something can stand on top of them: an eye on legs is 见 "to see", a mouth on legs is 兄 "elder brother", and the same pair of legs carries 元, 光 and 先. In simplified Chinese the shape does double duty as 兒, the ér of 女儿 and of the retroflex ending 一点儿.
