Where the shape comes from
A hand gripping the end of a long-handled tool, its striking head raised — a generic weapon or implement wielded at arm’s length, from spears to hammers. Rock struck and broken into pieces gives 段, a section, a segment; a hall guarded at its rear by an armed attendant gives 殿, a palace hall; and something beaten until it gives way gives 毁, to destroy.
