Where the shape comes from
A right hand with three fingers standing in for five — the shorthand the script uses for every hand it draws. The word itself was borrowed for the adverb yòu "again", but as a component it is still a hand doing something: 友 two hands clasped, 双 a pair, 取 a hand at an ear, 对, 发, and the hand holding meat in 有.
