“不料”

“不料”:出乎意料

不料 opens a second clause reporting something that went against what was planned or expected, usually something unwelcome. It needs a first clause stating the expectation, and it stands before the subject. For a result that confirms expectations, the word is 果然.

literally means “did not expect”, and it works as a hinge between a plan and its upset: , “I’d planned to go hiking at the weekend, but out of nowhere it began to pour.” The first clause sets up the expectation, very often with , , or ; the second, after , delivers the surprise.

stands at the head of its clause, before the subject: , not . In this it differs from , an adverb that follows the subject and marks surprise inside a single clause: .

The surprise is usually unwelcome, though it need not be; what matters is that it was not expected. A sentence where the outcome matches the forecast is therefore wrong with . , contradicts itself; the right word is “as expected”.

belongs to narrative and written style. In conversation the same hinge is : ,.

对比

Most errors with this pattern are not errors about this pattern — they are a neighbouring pattern arriving at the wrong moment. Read these side by side.

“不料”“虽然……但是……”

虽然…但是… contrasts two facts that are both known: it rained, but we went. 不料 contrasts a plan or belief with what then happened: we meant to go, and then — unexpectedly — it rained. The second clause of 不料 is new information that overturns the first; the second clause of 但是 is simply the other side.
