   Points at something near the speaker. On its own it is the subject of a sentence (这是我的书); in front of a noun it needs a measure word between them: 这个人, 这本书.

   In speech 这个 is usually said zhège, and 这一个 is shortened to 这个 in all but the most emphatic sentences.

常见错误

• 不太对这书很好。

  正确这本书很好。

  A demonstrative cannot sit straight against a noun. 这 and 那 need a measure word in between — 本 for books, 个 for most other things.
