量词的难题:个不是万能的

You cannot count a noun in Chinese without a measure word, and the general-purpose one covers less ground than beginners hope. The dozen that handle most of daily life, the traps inside them, and how to store a measure word so it arrives with the noun.

English lets you count most nouns directly: three books, two chairs, one dog. It only reaches for a measure when the noun is not naturally countable — two slices of bread, a sheet of paper, three cups of coffee. Chinese has generalised that behaviour to every noun. Between a number (or / / ) and a noun, something has to sit:

Number or demonstrative + measure word + noun

  • sān běn shū — three books
  • zhège rén — this person
  • jǐ zhāng piào — how many tickets
  • liǎng bēi kāfēi — two cups of coffee

Leave the slot empty and the sentence is not merely unidiomatic, it is ungrammatical: is not a thing you can say.

Beginners meet (gè) first, correctly learn that it is the general-purpose measure word, and then quietly conclude that it is a universal escape hatch. It is not. It is a very large default with hard edges, and the edges are exactly where a listener notices you.

What does and does not cover

is genuinely broad. It is right for people ( yí ge rén, sān ge xuésheng), for many everyday objects (, , ), for abstractions ( yí ge wèntí, yí ge xiǎngfǎ, yí ge jīhuì) and for chunks of time such as , , .

It is wrong — audibly wrong, not merely stylistically odd — for a large set of extremely common nouns. is not something a native speaker produces. Nor is , or . These are not exotic words: they are book, paper, trousers and car.

There is a second reason not to lean on . Measure words carry information. and are not equally good; and have different registers; and hearing rather than tells a Chinese listener something about your manners. The measure word is part of the noun's identity, not decoration attached to the number.

The dozen that cover most of daily life

You do not need a long list. You need about a dozen used automatically.

gè — the default: people, abstractions, many objects. , , .

běn — bound volumes. , , , .

zhāng — flat things with a surface. , , , , , , .

tiáo — long, thin, flexible things, real or abstract. , , , , , (a text message), .

zhī — most animals, and one of something that comes in a pair. , , , , , .

jiàn — upper-body clothing, and matters or affairs. , , , .

bǎ — things you grasp by a handle. , , , .

bēi / píng / wǎn — containers used as measures. , , .

shuāng / duì — pairs. , , ; (a married couple).

wèi — people, respectfully. , , ? (asked at a restaurant door: "for how many?").

jiā — businesses and establishments. , , , , .

liàng / tái / bù — vehicles, machines, and films or devices. , ; , ; , .

Two more that behave slightly differently but appear constantly: xiē for an indefinite plural (, , ) and fèn for portions and copies (, , ).

The traps

Chairs and tables split. but . A table is a surface; a chair is something you take hold of. Beds follow tables: .

Clothing splits by body half. for tops — , , — and for trousers and skirts, because they are long: , . Shoes are counted in pairs with and singly with .

Dogs take two. Both and are used and both are correct; cats are overwhelmingly . This is a good illustration of a general truth: measure words are conventional, and conventions occasionally allow more than one answer. Where usage genuinely varies, learn the one you hear around you.

is respectful, so do not use it about yourself. is normal; sounds as though you are complimenting your own party. In a restaurant, the staff say ?and you answer .

, not , before a measure word. , , — never . is for counting aloud, for numbers within larger numbers (, ) and for ordinals ().

does not take other numbers. , , , — but never .

Some nouns are already measures and take the number directly. (three days), (two years), (ten years old), (five lessons), — note the asymmetry. Days and years need nothing; weeks, months and hours need : but , but , (two o'clock) but (two hours). This single pattern accounts for a large share of beginner errors about time.

Halves and approximations sit around the measure word. yí ge bàn xiǎoshí (an hour and a half), (half an hour), (over three months), (over two hundred people).

Verbs have their own measures too. cì counts occurrences (, I have been twice), biàn counts complete run-throughs (, say it once more in full), xià softens (, , ). These are not optional politeness: and are different sentences.

How to learn them so they arrive on time

The failure mode is learning measure words as a list, separately from nouns. That produces a learner who knows that exists, and who still says in real time, because the retrieval happens too late.

Store them attached. Whenever you record a new noun, record it inside a counted phrase: not but ; not but ; not but . On a flashcard, front the prompt with the whole phrase so the measure word is part of what you are answering. It costs nothing extra at the moment of learning and saves the retrieval later.

Then use the natural drill: describe your surroundings in counted phrases. 、。Zhuōzi shang yǒu sān běn shū, yì tái diànnǎo hé yì bēi kāfēi. Two minutes of that a day, on real objects in your real room, does more than an hour of list-learning.

And when you genuinely do not know

Say . You will be understood, no one will be confused, and the sentence keeps moving — which matters more mid-conversation than being right. Then look it up afterwards and store the correct one with the noun, so the guess does not become a habit.

The honest summary is that measure words are not a grammar problem to be solved once. They are a vocabulary problem, distributed across every noun you will ever learn, and the only cheap moment to deal with each one is the moment you meet the noun.
