Forgetting Is Also a Skill
A science essay on forgetting. A nineteenth-century German psychologist memorised meaningless letter strings and found that forgetting is fast at first and then slows; the curve still shapes revision apps. Forgetting keeps the useful from being buried, as the people who forget almost nothing can testify, and spaced revision tells the brain what to keep. About 820 characters inside HSK 1–6.

Many people know this frustration: a word learned only yesterday cannot be recalled today; after leaving the house, you cannot remember whether you locked the door.

We often take forgetting as a sign of a poor memory and wish we could remember everything.

But research in recent years shows that forgetting is not entirely a bad thing; it is in fact an important ability of the brain.
