Where the shape comes from
The word for yellow, one of the five classical colours and, by long association, the colour of the earth itself in Chinese thought — old accounts disagree on the picture behind it, some reading a person wearing a ceremonial jade pendant, others a field or a fire-tipped arrow, without settling the question. What is certain is its reach: it names the 黄河, the Yellow River, whose silt-laden water gives it its colour and its name, and 黄金, gold, yellow metal.
