Where the shape comes from
A ram’s head seen from the front, with the horns curving down and out at the top — the exact opposite of the ox 牛, whose horns curve up. Sheep were wealth and the choice offering, so the radical carries approval as well as livestock: 美 beautiful, 群 a flock and a crowd, 羞, 鲜. Capped on top of a character it flattens to ⺷, and it lends its sound to 洋, 样 and 详.
