Where the shape comes from

A standing figure with a design drawn across the chest — a tattoo or a painted pattern; the oldest forms show the pattern plainly. From "pattern" the word moved to the marks cut into bone and cast into bronze, and so to writing and to learning itself: 中文, 文字, 文化. Few characters are filed under it, but it lends its sound to 蚊 and 纹.
