Where the shape comes from
A pair of wings spread apart, mirrored so that each half points away from the other — two things pulled in opposite directions, which is how the character came to mean wrong, opposed, and simply not. It gives 非常, extremely, literally not ordinary, out of the common run, and names disputes themselves in 是非, right and wrong, the rights of a matter set against its wrongs.
