Where the shape comes from
A vessel of dark, fragrant wine brewed from black millet, poured out specifically as a libation to the ancestors rather than drunk — a sacred, specialised cousin of the plainer wine jar 酉. It has almost no life left in the modern language, kept mostly for classical and ritual vocabulary like 秬鬯, the black-millet libation wine named in ancient texts, and as a rare dictionary classifier.
