Where the shape comes from

A shafted weapon with the blade set crosswise near the top and a tassel hanging at the head — the standard infantry arm of the Bronze Age. It marks fighting in 战 and 或, and it carries, by pure loan of sound, two of the commonest words in the language: 我 and 找.
