Where the shape comes from
Two door leaves hung facing each other, each on its own post — 户 doubled. It marks doorways and what happens at them: 间 the space between two doors, 闪 to flash past one, 闭 to shut, 闲, 阅. Two very common characters take 門 for its sound alone and are filed elsewhere in Kangxi: 問 under the mouth 口 and 聞 under the ear 耳. Simplification cut the leaves down to 门 and, in 開 and 關, threw the gate away altogether.
