Where the shape comes from
A deer seen from the side, its branching antlers rising above a long-legged body — one of the script’s cleanest, most immediately readable pictographs, needing almost no explanation. It names the animal directly in 鹿角, antlers, and lends its outline to the mythical, deer-bodied 麒麟, the qilin, an auspicious creature that appears, legend says, only in times of good rule.
