HSK 4 Practice: Timed Reading with Evidence

A practice lesson, not official exam material: read the question first, locate the evidence, match paraphrases and reject attractive unsupported options.

HSK 4· HSK 1–4 (classic)18 min

What you will be able to do

  • Turn a question stem into two or three search words before reading the passage.
  • Underline the sentence that proves the answer and name the paraphrase used.
  • Use a time limit without guessing before checking the evidence.

Question, evidence, paraphrase

This is original HSK 4-style practice, not official exam material. A fast reader does not understand every word first. The reader knows what evidence to look for.

Passage

,。,。,,。

Question: ?

Best answer: ,,。 The parking repair creates the constraint: ,. states his goal, and is his response. The extra twenty minutes is a disadvantage. is true, but the passage presents it as a benefit, not the stated reason for changing transport.

Inference question: ?

Best answer: ,。 The structure …… balances the longer journey against reading news and avoiding the parking search. “He loves buses” is too strong; “he has no choice and hates it” is also unsupported.

How to work through it

  1. Reduce the questionread

Turn 为什么坐公共汽车 into the search pair 公共汽车 + 原因. For the attitude question, write 态度 + contrast. Do this before rereading the passage.

  2. Scan for anchorsread

Give yourself 45 seconds. Circle 停车场, 公共汽车 and 停车位; box 为了 and 虽然…但是…. Stop when the evidence sentence is located.

  3. Name the paraphrasequiz

Match 只能停很少的车 to 停车位少 and 到处找停车位 to 不容易停车. Say what changed in wording while the meaning stayed.

  4. Reject two trapsquiz

Explain why 因为坐车更快 is contradicted and 因为可以在车上看新闻 is true-but-not-the-stated-reason. Then restate the complete answer with both the parking constraint and 为了不迟到.

  5. One-minute evidence notewriting

Write: answer → exact evidence → paraphrase. Complete both questions in one minute each. If you cannot cite evidence, mark the answer uncertain rather than guessing.
