So that’s it: 原来 for discoveries
原来 has two uses. As a sentence adverb it announces a discovery — the truth that explains something. As a time word it means “originally”, implying that things have since changed.
Structure
(我说怎么…,)原来 + 真实情况 | 原来 + 动词(=以前,后来变了)
Explanation
Chinese words in this text can be activated to show a dictionary gloss.
, “No wonder it’s so cold — the window’s open.” In its discovery sense, introduces a fact the speaker has only just realised, and that fact usually explains something that had been puzzling. A typical sentence has two parts: the puzzle, often framed as …, and the answer, opened by . The answer can also stand alone as an exclamation: ! “So you two already knew each other!”
Because marks new knowledge, it cannot follow a statement that the speaker already knew: , contradicts itself. Pair it with or instead, or with nothing at all.
The second sense is temporal. , “He originally lived in Shanghai, and later moved to Beijing.” Here sits after the subject like , and the sentence normally goes on to say what is different now. Before a noun it needs : , .
In listening items, is a strong signal: whatever follows it is usually the correct explanation, and whatever the speaker believed before it is usually wrong.
