Explanation

Chinese words in this text can be activated to show a dictionary gloss.

, “So he lived in China for ten years — no wonder his Chinese is so good.” does not predict a result. It looks back at something the speaker had already observed — the good Chinese — and says that it is no longer surprising, because the cause has just come to light.

The two halves usually come with a partner. marks the discovery: “so that’s it”. The order is free — cause first and then , or first and then — but the roles are not: always sits on the observed fact, never on the newly learned cause. , “No wonder you’re so happy today — you passed the exam.”

Because already carries the link between the two facts, it does not combine with . And because it explains something already seen, it cannot introduce a decision or a plan. means the same and is slightly more colloquial.

Correct

Say each one out loud before moving on. The audio is a reference pronunciation, not a model to imitate exactly — match the tone contour, not the voice.

Most errors with this pattern are not errors about this pattern — they are a neighbouring pattern arriving at the wrong moment. Read these side by side.

“难怪”“因为……所以……”

所以 and 难怪 both join a cause to a result, but they look in opposite directions. 所以 reasons forwards: given the cause, here is what follows — 他在中国住了十年,所以汉语说得很好. 难怪 reasons backwards: the result was already in front of you, and the cause has just turned up — 原来他在中国住了十年,难怪汉语说得这么好. 难怪 therefore carries surprise resolved, and is often paired with 原来 and with 这么.
