Explanation

,? “It’s only a small thing — why get so angry?” asks “why must…?”, but nobody expects a reason in reply. The question is a gentle way of saying “there’s no need”, and it often comes with the reason why there is no need: the matter is small, the metro is quick, you don’t even like it.

The usual shape is a reason, then + verb phrase, ending with : ,? often supplies the reason: ,? “Since you don’t like it, why buy it?” is an adverb and follows the subject when there is one: ?

already makes the sentence a question, so it does not take . Its tone is persuasive and slightly reproachful, and it is often used to comfort or to talk someone out of something: ,? “We’re all friends here — why stand on ceremony?” Learners sometimes confuse it with , which shares the character but argues “let alone”.

Correct

Say each one out loud before moving on. The audio is a reference pronunciation, not a model to imitate exactly — match the tone contour, not the voice.

Incorrect — Common mistakes

These sentences are wrong. They are printed here on purpose, each one paired with the repair and the reason, because the error you can recognise is the error you stop making.

Compared with

Most errors with this pattern are not errors about this pattern — they are a neighbouring pattern arriving at the wrong moment. Read these side by side.

“何必”“何况”

Both are rhetorical and both begin with 何, but they do different jobs. 何必 + verb questions whether an action is worth doing: 何必打车呢? “Why bother with a taxi?” 何况 + noun or clause carries an argument from a stronger case to a weaker one: 连老师都不会,何况我们呢? “If even the teacher can’t, how could we?” 何必 is followed by an action; 何况 by the case the conclusion applies to.
