To act on something and change it. In everyday use it very often means "to disturb": 别影响他学习, don’t disrupt his studying. The image is in the characters — 影 a shadow, 响 a sound, the two things that reach you from elsewhere.

很 cannot stand in front of a verb like 影响. Either use it as a plain verb — 这件事影响了我 — or make it a noun and measure it: 对我影响很大.
